Waterbury Probate Court RecordsTwo hundred years of Probate Court history, from 1779 to 1979, are housed in the basement of the Silas Bronson Library. To find a particular will or other Court document, you need a name and an approximate date. We have a handwritten index that does not cover the entire 200 year period. It ends at 1929. If you are seeking something from1930 or later, we suggest that you call the Court to get the volume and page number. We can then retrieve the volume you need. Library patrons are not allowed to go into the basement storage area. Staff may retrieve one probate record book at a time for you to view, in close proximity of the Main Reading Room reference desk. No photocopying or scanning of the probate books is permitted. You may bring in a digital camera to photograph pages. The Probate Court began microfilming its archives in 1980. If you are seeking something from 1980 or later, you would need to visit the Waterbury Probate Court, since that is where the microfilm is kept. The records stored here at the Bronson Library are considered public information, which means that you do not need to establish any particular relationship to the deceased in order to see the records. Adoption files are handled differently. You would need to contact the Probate Court for more information about adoption records.
