A Call for Tutors Discover how you can help local adults learn how to read, write, speak and understand English. Attend a one-hour Volunteer Orientation to learn about LVGW, the students we serve, volunteer opportunities, and the training program. This Tutor Training is supported by grant funding from the Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation. Announcing The Big Read: Waterbury celebrates Fahrenheit 451 Join us at a Book Discussion on Tuesday, October 21 at 10am at Barnes & Noble, Waterbury. Don Giroux (LVGW tutor and retired educator )will facilitate a lively discussion on Fahrenheit 451. We have extra copies of the book in the LVGW Office – just call Tina to reserve your copy at 203-754-1164 and to register for the discussion. Friends and Family are also invited to join in! Our Mission To teach adults to read, write, speak and understand English so that they may achieve personal, educational, employment and civic goals. About Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, Inc. Literacy Volunteers was founded in Syracuse, New York in 1962. It quickly grew into a national organization with affiliates throughout the U.S. In 2002, Literacy Volunteers of America merged with Laubach Literacy to form ProLiteracy Worldwide, the largest adult literacy organization in the world. Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury (LVGW) was founded in 1974. As an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, we are proud to be a member of a national and international network of community-based education programs. LVGW is located in the lower level of the Silas Bronson Library, Waterbury. LVGW strives to meet the literacy needs of adults in the Greater Waterbury area residing in the following 14 towns: Waterbury, Wolcott, Plymouth, Thomaston, Prospect, Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Oxford, Cheshire, Bethlehem, Middlebury, Southbury, Woodbury, and Watertown/Oakville. LVGW offers Adult Student Programs in Basic Literacy (BL) for adults who speak English but read and write at very low levels, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for non-English speakers who need instruction in reading, writing, speaking and understanding English, and Family Literacy designed for parents of children in pre-school and elementary school.
